Bizhu is the most important socio-religious festival of the Chakma tribal of Tripura. This festival gave birth to the Bizhu dance which is the most popular dance of the Chakmas. Bizu means Chaitra-sankranti, which denotes the end of the Bengali Calendar year. It is during this period that the Chakmas bid good-bye to the year just being ended and welcome the new year. It is said that the Bizhu dance, in its ancient form , used to be performed as a religious devotional dance at the compound of the temple. The dance is beautifully orchestrated with the rhythm playing of drums and flute.
